UCSF Hepatitis C Cure Initiative

This program is designed to help all UCSF patients with the hepatitis C virus get better. If you have hepatitis C, we will reach out to you to set up appointments with hepatitis C specialists who can help treat you. The treatment is quick, easy, and it cures the virus more than 95% of the time.

How the program works

Personal calls

  • One of our team’s navigators will call you to tell you about the program and ask a few short questions about any hepatitis C testing or treatment that you’ve had before.
  • The navigator will help set up lab tests and schedule a video or in person visit with one of our hepatitis C specialists. This phone call will be about 10 minutes long.

Laboratory tests

  • When you join the program, you’ll get some blood tests and liver tests done.  Your specialist will also go over your results at your appointment and you can see your results in MyChart as well.

Appointment with hepatitis C specialist

  • Your hepatitis C specialist will explain your lab results during a visit that lasts about 30 minutes.
  • If you do have the hepatitis C virus, the specialist will prescribe an antiviral therapy, which is an oral medicine, for you to take for 8-12 weeks. UCSF’s Specialty Pharmacy will help get approval for your medicine and send it to you.
  • You’ll have more blood tests and see the same specialist a few times over the next 2-3 months.
